The Oberlandesgericht Dusseldorf is the superior court to the Landgerichte, Provincial Courts, of Dusseldorf, Duisburg, Wuppertal, Krefeld, Mönchengladbach and Kleve. Along with Cologne and Hamm, it serves as one of the three highest Courts in the state of North Rhine Westfaphia. In its area of jurisdiction it the place of appeal. Issues of civil law, family law, criminal law and administrative law are handled at the Oberlandesgericht by 167 judges. 

The higher regional court of Dusseldorf is the youngest of three higher regional courts of the state  North Rhine Westphalia. Founded in 1906 from parts of the higher regional court districts of Hamm and Cologne, it is the second largest higher regional court in the state.

Indeed, measured according to size the district has remanied the smallest one (approx. 5,000 km ², Cologne OLG: 7,400 km ², OLG Hamm: Today 21,600 km ²), the number of the court-established lies, however, with 4.66 millions and with it slightly higher than in the district of the older higher regional court of Cologne (4.32 millions, OLG Hamm. 9.08 millions). The higher regional court of Dusseldorf has only a few very significant jurisdictions as a court of trial; such as  in criminal and competition and monopolies issues. Primarily, it serves six regional courts and 29 district courts, Amtsgerichte, Additionally, the court is responsible for the education and support of judicial education: the first judicial exams, overseen by the in house examination board and the support of all articled clerks / law students. The main building, constructed in 1910 is under a preservation order as a historic building and is located  in the attractive avenue called the Cecilienallee next to the Rhine.
