The 21st Shakespeare Festival at The Globe, Neuss, takes place this year from 17 June to 16 July. The replica of Shakespeare’s original theatre in the Rennpark, Neuss, will see a total of fifteen productions, and once again it will bring together some high-quality contributions on an international level.

Companies and ensembles will come from England, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Korea and Zimbabwe to present some of the immortal works of the Bard of Stratford-on-Avon.The focal point of this year’s theatrical experience will be Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, who will ponder the crucial question “To be, or not to be?” four times, in English, Korean and German, with the same well-reasoned malaise

One undoubted highlight of the festival is “Hamlet (from the East)”, performed by the Yohangza Theatre Company from Korea; Shakespeare’s original text will be presented by the Globe Touring Company; two actors from Zimbabwe will perform the play in concentrated form, and a German version will be given by the Bremer Shakespeare Company from Bremen.

Lovers of France and the French language are catered for with the “Comédie des erreurs”, performed by the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne.

For lovers of Shakespeare in English, the Globe Touring Company will perform the many-layered comedy As You Like It, while the excellent Propeller Company will contribute The Comedy of Errors and the historical drama Richard III.

“Shakespeare – a German writer”, a lecture brought from the Globe Theatrein London, will be given by the well-known German actor Sebastian Koch with his English colleague Philip Cumbus.

The “Poetenpack” troupe from Potsdam offers the comedy Twelfth Night, while Much Ado about Nothing comes from the Rheinisches Landestheater. A newcomer to the Neuss Shakespeare Festival this year is Troilus and Cressida, performed in German by the Hochschule für Schauspielerkunst “Ernst Busch” drama school of Berlin.

The “Romeo & Julia Kören”, one of Sweden’s top choirs, will bring us a dramatised musical arrangement of Macbeth, and the soprano Elizabeth Watts and baritone Stephan Loges, accompanied by Simon Lepper on the piano, will give a recital devoted to famous arias and duets from stage works inspired by Shakespeare’s plays. And, of course, Patrick Spottiswoode will be giving some more of his legendary lectures!
