Insurance is a complex subject.  Not everything you may be familiar with in your home country may be quite the same in another.

You should not therefore assume that the cover or procedures are the same as you would expect to have ‘back home’, wherever that may be.
Different cultures, attitudes and legislation can have an effect and you should be aware of the differences or seek advice accordingly.

This is particularly important when it comes to health insurance, which is a real ‘minefield’, not only for expatriates but also for German citizens and even the various German authorities who for example have to consider eligibility of different schemes for different categories of people as well as in connection with the issue of visa and residence permits.
